In the interest of public safety, several roads and trails will be subject to temporary detours and closures during the harvest. Detours and closures will impact Hickory Mountain Road, Boundary Trail, Guion Trail, Hooker Creek Trail, Rifle Trail and White Pine Trail. Forest visitors are asked to remain alert and respect temporary closures and detours when they occur.

In response to hazardous conditions from Winter Storm Izzy, officials at DuPont State Recreational Forest (DSRF) and Holmes Educational State Forest (HESF) have issued a Hazardous Conditions Notice effective immediately through Friday morning, Jan. 21. Roads, parking areas and trails remain covered with snow and ice. A single-track trail closure is in effect for both forests, and forest officials encourage the public to stay home and stay safe.
The 9”-12” of snow and ice in DSRF, HESF and the surrounding area has created hazardous conditions such as delays in emergency help, unsafe road and trail conditions, overhead hazards from weakened or damaged trees and inoperable/inaccessible facilities including parking areas and restrooms. Visitors are encouraged to plan their visit for a later date when forest staff have been able to assess conditions and make necessary repairs. During any visit, visitors should pay attention to all signage and barricades related to possible trail and road closures.
Updates to this advisory will be available on the DSRF website at www.dupontstaterecreationalforest.com, the HESF website at https://www.ncesf.org/holmes/home.html and the N.C. Forest Service’s Twitter and Facebook pages.
